So you’ve already moved into your home for the next 10 months and you’ve already met a few amazing friends! But what’s next? Oh right, the first day of classes. Your first day of college classes is nothing like your first day of high school classes. You have further to walk, spare time to kill, and new people to meet. But fret not, here’s everything you can expect your first day of college classes.
GIVE YOURSELF EXTRA TIME TO GET TO CLASS
Whether your campus is big or small give yourself extra time to get to your classes. You might find yourself struggling to find your classroom or you might decide to stop for some coffee before you have to sit through your first 1 hour and 15-minute class (and trust me, in college those are the worse!). Give yourself about 5 extra minutes than you think it’ll take you to get to class. If anything else, you can be a little early and pick the seat you want.
IT’S OKAY TO ASK FOR DIRECTIONS
Don’t be afraid to ask for directions. I know you’re already thinking that you don’t want anyone else knowing that you’re a freshman and that asking for directions will only make you stand out like a sore thumb, but don’t worry. Go ahead and ask for directions, no one is going to be rude to you. I remember once during my Junior year I was visiting another university in the area and had to ask for directions, everyone was so nice!
DON’T BRING ALL OF YOUR STUFF WITH YOU THE FIRST DAY
The first day of class means syllabus day. Unless your professor has requested that you bring a specific item or book to class on the first day there’s no need to! Don’t lug around all your stuff until you have to, am I right? Really all you need is a folder, a small notebook, your planner, and a few pens or pencils.
WEAR WHAT YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE IN
I remember the first day of class growing up always meant getting up extra early to make sure my hair and makeup were perfect and my outfit was stylish; however, in college, no one really cares. We all still look decent for the first day of class, don’t get me wrong, but you don’t have to go all out! One semester I wore yoga pants and a crewneck sweatshirt for the first day of class and no one batted an eye. So go ahead and wear what you feel comfortable in and rock that look!
YOU’RE GOING TO HAVE FREE TIME
You might have a class at 11am and your next one may not start until 2pm. Spend the first day finding a spot you can spend your breaks in on days you don’t want to go back to your room or want to be productive. If you go ahead and find this spot now, you’ll be in the habit of not being lazy between classes. Trust me on this one!
THERE WILL BE A LOT GOING ON
Welcome Week holds a lot of activities and groups for you to meet. Don’t skip out on getting to know what student organizations are around or not taking advantage of all the fun events and free stuff your school is giving away!
IT WILL BE ONE OF THE BEST DAYS OF YOUR YOUNG LIFE
Next to Pretzel Day, your first day of college classes will be one of the best days of the year. You’ll be experiencing a whole new world and meeting all new people. Take advantage of your first day of classes and soak in all the excitement, because every other day you’ll be in the library writing your research paper.
